The question before Southerners who are committed to
liberty and independence is, how should we vote in the
2004 Presidential Election? Most of us take the
responsibilities of citizenship seriously. But when confronted with the truly
dismal choices the Democrats and Republicans are offering this year, we're
torn. Do we succumb, as usual, to the 'lesser of two evils'
argument, hold our nose, and vote for Bush? Or do we reason
that he's been such a disaster even the execrable John Kerry is preferable, if for
no other reason than to break up the neo-conservative cabal that
has gotten us embroiled in a disastrous imperial war and given us a
near police state in the bargain. Or do we 'waste our vote' on
a philosophically compatible but quixotic third party candidate? Perhaps the dilemma can be
answered with three simple words: withhold your
vote.
As political parties
go, Republicans are marginally better than Democrats, but is the
difference enough to really make a difference? What have today's
conservatives actually conserved? Liberty? The principle of limited
government? The Constitution? In John Wayne's immortal words, not hardly!
Mostly they protect their access to power, their perks, and their
privileges just like the Left. They maintain the status quo of unlimited,
unaccountable government delivered to us by the Left, but they never roll
it back, nor will they ever. It is the GOP and the Invasion of the
Neo-Conservative Body Snatchers who have given us the disastrous war in
Iraq. It is our supposed friends who have given us open borders, swamping
us with immigration from the Third World; and put in place the machinery
for a possible police state in the guise of fighting terror far more
dangerous than anything ever done by liberal
Democrats.
But the pundits of conventional wisdom are always telling
us, 'If you don't vote you can't complain about the outcome.' Actually,
the reverse is true. If you do participate in the alleged sham we call
federal elections, you have no logical right to complain because you've
tacitly conceded the process is legitimate. Only the person who withholds
his vote has a right to complain, because only he has challenged the
validity of the fraudulent process.
To vote or not to vote. You make the call.

Poll Results In our last issue we asked the question: Should Article 1, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution be amended to prohibit the U.S. government from interference in the the "General Welfare" of the people of the several states? Once again a whopping 82% of our readers agreed with the Southern position and said yes. Only 18% were happy with the federal government determining what was good for the states. No one sat this one out and claimed to be undecided. Thanks to all our readers who participated in our poll. Look for more interesting polls in upcoming issues.

JULY
13 1865 William Marvin is appointed
Provisional Governor of Florida by President Andrew Johnson and directed
to call a constitutional convention to write a new constitution for the
state as a condition for being readmitted to the Union. Although the
Convention met in Tallahassee on October 28 and wrote a new governing
document, the new constitution, which would have become effective on
November 7, was never activated because Congress assumed responsibility
for establishing the rules for readmission and Johnson's program was
rejected.
JULY 17 1779 General Andrew Jackson formally
accepts sovereignty to Florida on behalf of the United States in Pensacola at Government House and
Fort Barrancas. American troops, led by Colonel George Brooke (for whom Fort
Brooke--later Tampa--was named), with General Jackson following, exchanged courtesies with Spanish Governor Cavalla
and a formal exchange of ownership ceremony
followed.
JULY 17 1863 The C.S.S. Florida, with
Commander John Newland Maffitt at the helm, puts into Bermuda to obtain
coal and make repairs. Maffitt, upon reaching Bermuda, sent word to the port commander that he
planned to salute the British flag and asked whether or not the British would
return the salute. Colonel William Munro, the British commander, consulted with the Governor
and informed Maffitt that the British would return gun for gun any salute
offered thus officially recognizing the Confederate States of
America.
JULY 21 1821 On this date, Escambia and St. Johns
Counties became the first two counties in Florida (now numbering 67).
Escambia County is named for the Escambia River, but the origins of this
name is lost forever. Some scholars think "Escambia" is derived from the
Spanish verb, "cambar," which means to barter. Others, however, argue that
the word is derived from either the Choctaw or Chickasaw dialects. St.
Johns County was named for San Juan Bautisata, the Catholic saint.

Southern
National Congress
A Southern National Congress will convene March 4-5,
2005, in Montgomery,
Alabama.
The political factors facing the South will be
different after the November 2004 elections, regardless of who wins the
United States presidency, and regardless of which major political party ends
up dominating the U.S. Congress. By convening the Congress in
March 2005, the SNC will have the opportunity to respond to these changed
political conditions.

Prisoner of State From the journal of a victim "Military necessity" was the pretext utilized by Lincoln and his gang to exercise certain powers and to arrest those citizens, who dared to disagree by verbal and/or written communication with Lincoln's manifestation of hostilities and usurpation of the Constitution of the United States. Those, who continued to have an allegiance to the Constitutional government and expressed such, were falsely arrested without ever knowing the nature and cause of their arrest. When asked for proof regarding committing any crimes against the United States, none was given for the most part, and when they were eventually discharged months or even years later, it was still unknown to them what crime they had committed. American political philosopher and senator from Virginia, John Taylor of Caroline (1753-1824), made this prophesy in the early 1820's: "I believe that a loss of independent internal power by our confederated States, and an acquisition of supreme power by the Federal department, or by any branch of it, will substantially establish a consolidated republic over all the territories of the United States, though a federal phraseology might still remain; that this consolidation would introduce a monarchy; and that the monarchy, however limited, checked, or balanced, would finally become a complete tyranny." Give it some thought. Would you agree or disagree with Senator Taylor's prediction of the fate of these united States?
Self-evident truths or convenient
slogans? By today's standards, King George III was a very mild tyrant indeed. He
taxed his American colonists at a rate of only pennies per annum. His
actual impact on their personal lives was trivial. He had arbitrary power
over them in law and in principle, but in fact it was seldom exercised. If
you compare his rule with that of today's U.S. Government, you have to
wonder why we celebrate our independence. "It was a famous victory." Read the details at http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig5/mclain2.html
Courting Illegal
Immigrants Presidential candidate John Kerry, in a recent appearence in Phoenix,
said to his audience, "It is time to fulfill the promise of America, so
that those who work hard and take responsibility and build a better life
for them and their families, and live by the rules, and pay their taxes
and raise their families have a right to share in America and its
citizenship in the fullest." Kerry then went on to promise that the 8
million to 12 million illegal aliens in the U.S. would be given a "path to
citizenship" in his first 100 days in office. But not a single individual who could benefit from Kerry's amnesty plan
has by any definition "played by the rules." According to the IRS, in 2001 individuals paying taxes with an ITIN,
rather than a Social Security number (i.e. illegal aliens; the only
individuals who have a need for or qualify for an ITIN are those without
citizenship or lawful permanent residency) paid $305 million in federal
income taxes. Calculated against 8 million illegal aliens, that's a per
capita federal tax payment of $38.13, and against 12 million illegal
aliens, that's a per capita federal tax payment of only $25.42. Since
neither payment indicates earnings that would allow an individual to
survive for one year, we can conclude only that there is persistent,
massive tax non-compliance among illegal immigrants. Read more at http://spofga.org/immigration/2004/june/candidates.phtml
Marriage. What's it all
about? Heated discussions are taking place across the
States over the right of same sex couples to marry. Many are now
even crying to our governments, both federal and state, to define the
meaning of the word. But is this a request for the Creator to
bless the union of two individuals, or is it a demand for the State
to "license" this union in a desire to receive those governental
priviledges and immunities
so coveted in todays society? In the July 2003 issue of the newsletter, this delima regarding the licensing
of Christian marriage was addressed. Go to http://coolchange.net/newsletter/2-7.htm to read
the inciteful details.
