Headlines From the Past
 
In keeping with the Declaration of Independence that "whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness", just about every major Northern newspaper editorialized in favor of the Southern States' right to take this course of action.

Tyranny and despotism?  It was admitted then.  Could it be true today?
 


This Month in Florida History  

SEPTEMBER  5   1950   Hurricane Easy struck the area from Yankeetown to Cedar Key. This unusual storm, with winds of 125 mph, produced the single greatest 24-hour rainfall in Florida since records have been kept. Over today and tomorrow (September 5-6), 38.7 inches of rain fell at Yankeetown.  
 
SEPTEMBER  6   1928   The Great Lake Okeechobee Hurricane struck Florida as a Category 4 storm, with winds pushing lake waters to a storm surge of more than 15 feet. The area surrounding the lake's south end, occupied primarily by migrant agricultural workers, flooded. The Red Cross's death toll count reached 1,836, but additional bodies and skeletons were discovered after the end of the Red Cross count. In response to this disaster, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built dikes around the lake to prevent a recurrence. Florida author Zora Neale Hurston recorded the impact on this hurricane on migrants in her novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God. .
 
SEPTEMBER  8   1565   Today is the anniversary of the founding of St. Augustine.
From the account of Pedro Menendez's expedition to Florida in 1565 by Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales, the chaplain to the expedition.  "Satruday, the eight of September, the day of the Nativity of our Lady, the General disembarked with many banners displayed and many trumpets and other instruments of war, discharging much artillery. As I was on the Land since the day before, I took a cross and went out to receive them with the Psalm "Te Deum laudamaus," and the General came directly to the cross with all the rest that came with him, and kneeling on the knees on the earth they kissed the cross. There were a great number of Indians looking at these ceremonies and thus they did all they saw done. On this same day the General took possession of this land for His Majesty and all Captains swore him to be General of all this land."
 
SEPTEMBER 10   1964   Hurricane Dora swept across north Florida after coming ashore near St. Augustine. The storm's 125 mph winds produced a storm surge of 12-15 feet and, together, the elements did more than $250 million in damages [$1 billion in 1990 dollars]. This was the first hurricane to strike Florida north of Stuart since the Hurricane of 1880 .
 
SEPTEMBER 20   1822   The City of St. Augustine was incorporated under the Territorial Laws of Florida. 

SEPTEMBER 15   1949   Today's WJXT-TV in Jacksonville first signed on the air on this date under the call sign WMBR-TV

SEPTEMBER 23   1888   One hundred sixty-three yellow fever cases reported in the epidemic at Jacksonville. Before the epidemic is over, four hundred twenty-seven persons would die.


 
A Federal System No More?
 
The presidential election of 2000 showed that America is now divided into two great political classes: the productive, taxpaying class and the parasitic, live-at-others'-expense class. The latter group includes millions of welfare bums, federal, state and local government bureaucrats and "contractors," and their massive supporting propaganda apparatus in the universities, on television, and in print journalism. Now that the vast majority of what the central government does is unconstitutional, there is almost no restraint at all on the extent to which the latter class can use the coercive powers of the state to plunder the former class.

Some Things Are Worth Fighting For
 
It's a sad thing when even the brightest among the conservatives don't get it when it comes to the sell-out of the Republican Party.
 
In a recent column in the "Washington Post," George Will, commenting on some of the speakers at the Republican Convention, wrote approvingly of the prominent role given to California Governor Arnold Schwarzennegger and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, both of whom are pro-abortion and pro-homosexual "rights."
 
Referring to both men as having a "socially libertarian cast," Will said that the reemergence of such persons "into Republican respectability of conservatism" is "a development with a large potential to discomfort the Democratic Party." This "can make the Republican Party more appealing to many young and suburban voters, two cohorts in which Democrats have recently made substantial gains."
 
Will also says: "The Republican Party's challenge is to keep its old fissures closed while relaxing the stringency of its social issues catechism." He says that at its Convention in New York City, the GOP "began in earnest the task of making others (persons such as Schwarzennegger and Giuliani) not only more comfortable within the party but eligible to rank among its leaders."
 
Now, what's wrong with this point of view is obvious to anyone who puts principles first and party and politics second. What Will is saying, in so many words, is that the Republican Party can be all things to all people --- indeed MUST be all things to all people --- because this will have a greater political appeal and get more votes. This argument is one of pure political expediency. It is immoral. It puts winning first. Thus, it is a corrupt argument.
 
Will also doesn't tell us how, exactly, a party can "relax the stringency of its social issues catechism." How does a party "relax" a pro-life view if the true pro-life view is that the snuffing out of the lives of all innocent, unborn human beings is always some form of homicide and, frequently, murder?
 
Ditto, homosexual "rights." How does one "relax" a view, the proper view, that "rights" do not accrue to people, homosexuals, simply because they practice a vile form of sexual perversion which God says is an abomination?
 
The English philosopher John Stuart Mill once said: "War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling, which thinks that nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
 
Amen! And so it is with politics. Fights over vitally important issues within a political party are not pleasant. But, there is something worse. And that something is the view that no vitally important issues within a party are worth fighting about because the most important thing is getting elected.
 
We in the Constitution Party do not believe this! We believe that there are things worth fighting about, and worth advocating --- such as honoring God, defending the traditional Christian family and working to restore our Constitutional Republic. We believe these things, and will fight for them, even if , by standing firm on these issues, this limits our appeal to the electorate. In fact, we will fight for them even if it means we lose an election.

Feds tell hurricane victims: No handicap access: No water. Federal Government: the model of efficiency, cooperation, economy, and caring for the 'People'. May the Lord help the people, for they seem to be fine with it. The government could not care less about the thirst of these people. Got to dot those i's and cross those t's, until then, DIE for your government. Seems the government is "doing it's best" as usual.

84% of our readers said the court was not created to reflect the popular opinion or passion of the day.  Only 16% thought the court should interpret the law with today's society in mind. No one claimed to be undecided on this important issue.
